A Little Less Advertising in the World

Our first AAAFFF action was a smashing success! Forgoing the Frisbee for a better-matching RWB football, AAAFFF consultant Sarah Kavage and ED Anne Elizabeth Moore spent sometime getting to know our constituency with a rousing game of catch in front of Leo Burnett in downtown Chicago. (More photos here.)

Our Regularly Scheduled Programming . . .

Clocking in a bit late to my Anti-Friday work day, ooops, and I’m revisiting an old issue: street artist Fauxreel’s blatantly criminal spring motorscooter ad series in his native Toronto. It’s a modern classic tale: corporate gas-guzzling motor vehicle manufacturer wants to up the street cred with some ads by a jen-yoo-wine member of the […]

How to Live in a City

YouTube – How to Live in a City While decades old, this reminds me of the great videos about public space, city planning and transportation put out by StreetsFilms right now. But how did they make a film about public space in New York in that era without Jane Jacobs?

Classic KAWS Footage From 1997

I remember seeing KAWS work in San Francisco when I was temping in downtown office buildings. It was a black and white ad for something in a Market Street kiosk and there was a green, multi headed snake attacking the model in the photo. I remember studying it trying to figure out if it was […]

How Valuable Is Our Public Space?

How valuable is our public space to advertisers and marketers? An anonymous agent of the Anti-Advertising Agency made some calls. How much does it currently costs to have street level ads in a city like San Francisco? Here’s some examples. Market Street Kiosks. Background: Three sided containing four by six foot poster advertisements. Introduced to […]

Anarchy: The Videogame

I know I said that posting would be sparse if at all while I was doing my residency at AS220 but, you know, this picture from a park in Barcelona came across my virtual desk courtesy the brilliant Matt Malooly in Chicago and I had to share its deeply conflictual messages with you. As you […]

The Cute Boy on the CTA

It’s my birthday today, so of course I’m off to the amazing Polish salt caves of northern Chicago with my friend Liz, and I’m therefore gonna forgo the whole critical engagement with the ad industry thing and just tell you a story. So a couple days ago, I was riding the train, when a super […]

James Howard Kunstler on Public Space

In this video James Howard Kunstler picks apart urban development in the United States, getting a few laughs in the process. In talking about creating “places that people care about” this struck me: “The public realm is the physical manifestation of the public good. And when you degrade the public realm you will automatically degrade […]

Boston Boots Musicians for Marketing Messages?

I love seeing amazing musicians performing in subways around the United States. When I worked in community radio, I even recruited some for on-air performances. I haven’t been to Boston in close to 10 years, but I remember the music I heard performed on the subways. Much like BART in the Bay Area, Boston’s MBTA […]

Do you want TV ads on Bart?

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is considering adding televisions to their trains and platforms, which would show 20 minutes of advertising per hour. The article mentions the advertising becoming a source of revenue for transit, although BART has a surplus this year, and according to BARTs estimates the additional revenue would, at best, be .01% […]

Graphic Imagery

I just came across this video. When we posted our Light Criticism video last month, a lot of people wondered how it was possible that city dwellers see over 5,000 advertisements each day (source). This video may help. “Kapitaal is a typographical stroll throug a Dutch city revealing the influence of graphic design.” Kapitaal is […]

Sáo Paulo Bans Outdoor Advertising in 2007

From last month’s New York Times and posted here in case it becomes difficult to access in the future. And a special note of hope to residents of the United States: as fantastic as a the Sáo Paulo ban sounds, remember that Vermont, Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine have all banned billboards in their state. There […]

Wired News: Sony Graffiti

From Wired News: Seeking to market its handheld game device to hip city dwellers, Sony has hired graffiti artists in major urban areas to spray-paint buildings with simple, totemic images of kids playing with the gadget. But the guerrilla marketing gambit appears to be drawing scorn from some of the street-savvy hipsters it’s striving to […]
